The first hybrid bike I purchased was for my wife. A beautiful cruiser, white wall tyres, laid back surfer style with a super comfortable seat. It was also surprisingly fast and could easily outpace my mountain bike with what seemed minimal effort.
However, it had one reasonably major problem. In the event of a flat tyre, changing it would result in an almost 2 hour disassemble and reassemble to change the inner tube! In addition, any issues with the gearing or brakes would require a visit to a specific bike shop and there was no chance of any D.I.Y. repairs!!
What really needed to be one of the major decisions in purchasing a hybrid bike was ease of maintenance and reliability.

Great for commuting to work
Fun, casual, safe and easy riding
Reliable and less likely to get a puncture
Easier and generally faster to ride than a mountain bike
